Discover the area around the Savoy Hotel: the beautiful historic Hradčany (Castle Area) district, home to the world’s largest castle complex according to the Guinness Book of World Records; the grounds of an ancient monastery; and a romantic neighborhood with picturesque houses, whose history also dates back to the Middle Ages. And to top it all off, there are beautiful views of Prague that will enchant and captivate you.

Hradčany (Castle Area) was founded as an independent town in the first half of the 14th century. However, its history stretches much further back in time. The hotel where you are staying is located on the western edge of Hradčany, not far from where the city walls once stood and one of the gates leading into Prague, which remained here until the very end of the 19th century. It has been less than 130 years since it was demolished. Here, history and the present intertwine very closely.

What places will we visit on our walk?

From the Savoy Prague Hotel, we’ll first head through an area called Pohořelec to the Strahov Monastery complex, which we’ll tour. You’ll learn interesting facts about the monastery’s past and present—a place that captivates not only ordinary tourists but also prominent politicians, artists, and businesspeople. Among those who have taken private tours of this monastery are actor Leonardo DiCaprio, director Martin Scorsese, author Dan Brown, and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

From the monastery grounds, I’ll take you to a magnificent viewpoint overlooking Prague, where you’ll see the city spread out before you. And that’s not all—you’ll also be able to see Prague Castle, which towers majestically over Prague and is the final stop on our guided tour.

From here, we’ll walk past the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the monumental Černín Palace—the longest Baroque palace in Prague— to a romantic neighborhood called Nový Svět. Why this name? In the Middle Ages, it was located outside the city walls, along one of the main roads leading to Prague Castle, in an area that some city residents may never have even reached—a world that was new, unexplored, and unknown to them. Simply put, Nový Svět. For a long time, poor people lived here, and entire families were often crammed into small houses. Today, it’s an interesting neighborhood that attracts tourists, but there are still people living here who have fallen in love with this place and tied their lives to it, at least for a while. This is no deserted area with short-term accommodations; people truly live here and together shape the community life of the place.

After leaving Nový Svět, we’ll continue on to Hradčanské náměstí and from there enter the grounds of Prague Castle, the largest castle complex in the world—at least according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Prague Castle, including its gardens, covers an area of approximately 70,000 square meters. We’ll walk through its courtyards and part of the gardens, if they’re open. You’ll learn about the history of the Czech state—first the Czech principality and later the kingdom—as well as the fact that Prague served twice in history as the seat of the Holy Roman Emperor, and you’ll discover the significance of Prague Castle today, no longer as the seat of the Czech king but, since 1918, as the seat of the president.
